Digital Globe Foundation Grant for SESLR-Project

The Sea and Land Routes of Southern Euboia (SESLR-) project aims to study seaborne and land-based communications involving southern Euboia in the period between ca. 4000 and 1 BC. The SESLR-project wishes to express its gratitude to the Digital Globe Foundation for making available satellite imagery of the region, which will be of enormous help for research into ancient land use and communication networks in southern Euboia. These high-quality data enable the project-members to apply a space-borne remote-sensing methodology for detecting and analysing new archaeological features and sites, with a special attention to site patterns, ancient road systems and coastal landscapes. The imagery also allows the project to study long-term fluctuations in the natural environment and their effects on ancient land use as well as on the current visibility and degradation of archaeological sites. Thus, the image grant of the Digital Globe Foundation will help to better understand the natural and cultural landscapes of southern Euboia and the ways these were interconnected on a local, regional and interregional scale.
